Actors And Actresses

Understanding Actors And Actresses

Radio, theater, movies, and TV drama and comedy shows all depend on the work of actors and actresses. The term actor originated with a Greek word that meant "to interpret." Thespis was the name of a Greek performer who, it is believed, was the first person to get on stage and play the part of another character in an acting role. Prior to Thespis's performance, narration, singing and dancing were the only forms of storytelling used. Today, actresses and actors are also referred to as thespians and the term was derived from the first actor's name. Up until the 17th century, all parts, both male and female, were played by men, as women were not allowed on stage.

Shakespearean plays are perhaps the most famous of the original stage productions, yet developments in both role playing and technology have brought about many changes in the last century. Performers are now famous for their work in a variety of mediums, including radio, television, film, and Broadway musicals and plays. Performers must have many different skills, including vocal projection, speaking clarity, ability to express emotional at will, an imagination, and the ability to memorize large scripts.

Actors and actresses are now branching out into invisible roles such as voice acting. Voice actors do work such as voice overs for radio, audio books, video games, computer animations and film dubbing. This vehicle allows them to use their acting talents without unnecessary distractions. These distractions might include having to make costume changes, worrying about lighting effects, or dealing with makeup. Many voices in the new animation films can be recognized as famous actresses and actors, helping to add popularity and generate movie ticket sales.

There are many different media forms that actors and actresses can be involved in today. Some examples might include TV drama, comedy, motion picture films and stage productions. To be successful in Hollywood, performers must have a variety of skills and know how to use them to their advantage. That knowledge and success will earn them awards, such as the Academy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards which are presented yearly.
